We set up our egg incubator ,we have placed 13 eggs total in so far. It takes about 21 days for the eggs to hatch. I have to rotate the eggs twice a day, I need to be very careful not to jar the eggs because they will break. We will have to do a fertility test twice to determine if the embryo is forming to be a chick. If the embryo isn't forming I will throw away the egg. Only 50-75% survive to hatch, some may even die after hatching if not properly cared for. I will soon start constructing a mini hen house, and a cage that can move around our yard for when they hatch. But for now they are still eggs.
Wow this sounds really neat and I can't wait to find out what happens next! If you left the eggs in the hen house now would they end up hatching on there own?

FROM GRANDMA JUDI - Wow, this is so exciting. Baby chicks are so cute. What are you going to do with all of them? 50 to 70% That is a lot to care for. How many hens do you have now? How do you think the chickens you have are going to react to the new chicks?
ReplyDeleteHi grandma Judi, we will raise the chicks to lay eggs. Right now we only have 11 hens because 2 disappeared. The lady at the feed store said that once one of her hens disappeared, then 21 days later it came back with its own chicks! I think our hens will be surprised because they will wonder where they came from.
